Every portrait session has a process behind it. When people see the final photo, they usually don’t see everything that went into creating that moment.

From choosing the location to setting up lighting and directing the subject, there are a lot of small decisions that shape the final image. Here’s a look at how I approach a typical portrait shoot for YK Vizuals.

Planning the Shoot

Before the shoot even starts, I usually think about the mood and style I want the portraits to have.

Sometimes the concept is simple — clean portraits with good lighting. Other times it might be something more cinematic with stronger shadows and dramatic lighting.

The location also plays a big role. If we’re shooting outdoors, I try to look for spots where the lighting and background work together.

Setting Up the Lighting

Lighting is one of the biggest parts of the process.

Depending on the shoot, I might use natural light, studio lights, or a combination of both. The goal is always the same — shape the light in a way that highlights the subject while keeping the image balanced.

Small adjustments like moving the light a little to the side or adjusting power can completely change how the portrait looks.

Directing the Subject

One thing I’m constantly working on is directing people during the shoot.

Most people aren’t professional models, so part of my job is helping them feel comfortable and guiding them through poses that look natural.

Sometimes the best shots happen when people relax and stop thinking about the camera.

Capturing the Final Images

Once everything comes together — the lighting, the posing, and the composition — that’s when the real magic happens.

Even small changes in expression or body position can make a big difference in the final image, so I usually take multiple shots and adjust things as we go.

Final Thoughts

Every shoot is different, and each one teaches me something new about lighting, composition, and working with people.

The more I shoot, the more I learn how to bring ideas to life and create portraits that feel natural, cinematic, and intentional.
